I have read so much about lower back pain and sciatica pain, but no one seems to be talking about upper abdominal pain, just under the rib cage. I am 29 weeks and have recently been experiencing severe burning pains just beneath my rib cage. My doctor says that it is related to my ligaments stretching. It was so severe these last few days I was in tears. Does this lessen as my tummy stretches, or does it only get worse as I get bigger? Are there some things I can do to alleviate this pain because Tylenol does not help!"
You have asked an excellent question. You're right about seeing a lot more written about low back or sciatic pain. What happens to ribs during pregnancy is really quite amazing. The angle of your ribs can increase by as much as 70 degrees to accomodate the growing fetus! This rapid change taxes the rib joints and can be very painful indeed. I think this problem is one that you need "hands on" help with and that an experienced physical therapist is in order. Check your area for a women's health physical therapy specialist; if you can't find one, contact the American Physical Therapy Association at 800-999-APTA and ask for the section on women's health. They can provide you with names of physical therapists in your area that have experience in working with pregnant women. You might also try a massage therapist who specializes in pregnancy massage and see if that helps.
P.S. Your ribs don't quite return to their original angle postpartum and you may go up a bra size.
