Expert Q&A
Question:
I am 11 weeks pregnant, and I am experiencing numbness, and sometimes pain, in my left hip and upper leg area. The numbness feels like a novocaine shot from the dentist that is wearing off and the pain is more if sleeping or putting pressure on the area. When the pressure is removed I feel the pain for 10 minutes or so. Is this normal, and what do I do?
Answer:
Even though you're not very big yet, the hormones of pregnancy start acting on your sacroiliac joint ligaments very early on. From what you describe, you may be experiencing this very painful condition. When these joints are lax, the pelvis is not symmetrical or fitting together well. This stretches on nerves creating a sciatica-type pain or even numbness. You may even notice the problem seems to come and go. Try to be sure and keep your positions in sitting and standing symmetrical: stand with weight going through both legs (don't shift from leg to leg); avoid crossing your legs while sitting, or placing your foot on one knee while you sit. While lying down and turning in bed (this can be this most painful of all), lie on your side with a couple of pillows width-wise down the length of your leg; this creates a "shelf" so to speak, and the top leg/knee won't crossover the lower leg. They'll remain "stacked." What I've just described above is good in preventing the pain from returning once your pelvis is symmetrical. If the pain worsens, see a physical therapist who is a women's health specialist. She can do manual therapy that will relieve your pain and restore normal joint alignment. She may even suggest you wear a special binder for a while to hold things in place and prescribe specific exercises. Call the American Physical Therapy Association at 800-999-2782 to obtain information on a women's health physical therapist in your area."
