Expert Q&A
Question:
Being pregnant, I've cut my coffee consumption from four to five cups a day to only one. Is that OK?
Answer:
The use of caffeine during pregnancy continues to be a heated topic. To date, there is no hard evidence that caffeine causes birth defects. Caffeine has, however, been linked in some studies to an increased risk of miscarriage. For this reason it makes sense to consume it in moderation.

What exactly is moderation? No more than two 5-ounce cups of coffee per day. Unfortunately, the American coffee cup is considerably larger than 5 ounces. So while you don't have to pass on your daily cup of java, you do need to take a good look at how big it is. If you find that it's over the limit, you may want to dilute it with decaf.
