I have always beleived that instant coffee had less caffeine than regular brewed coffee. So as an expecting mother for the third time, I commenced my routine of instant coffee. I have incorporated a way to lower my caffeine intake and increase my calcuim intake by exchanging hot water with instant coffee for hot milk with instant coffee. The other day I was boasting to a co-worker my favorite drink and why. My co-worker looked at me and stated that they beleived the opposite of instant coffee as it is condensed. I have tried and tried to locate information to reflect the difference in caffeine levels and have so far been unsucessful and decided to ask the experts. Which has the higher level of caffeine, regular brewed coffee or instant coffee?
You are correct. According to Bowes & Church Food Values of Portions Commonly Used, 6 fluid ounces of brewed regular coffee has 103 milligrams of caffeine. Your 6 fluid ounces of milk and instant coffee (using 1 rounded teaspoon) contains 57 milligrams of caffeine.
I commend you for finding a good solution for increasing your calcium while decreasing caffeine intake. Caffeine will not be detrimental to your calcium balance if you are consuming enough calcium each day (between 1000-1200 mg). Keep your overall caffeine intake well below 300 milligrams per day while pregnant. I often recommend even lower -- approximately 100 milligrams per day -- if trying to conceive and during the earliest weeks of pregnancy.
