Expert Q&A
Question:
I am about 17 weeks pregnant and I just recently started feeling some movement of the fetus in the form of waves, no kicking yet. Is this the normal? I've heard that boys start kicking faster than girls."
Answer:
Fetal movement can be observed on ultrasound as early as 10 weeks of gestation but most women will begin to feel the movements between 16 and 20 weeks of gestation. The earlier movements are usually felt as flutters, bubble sensation or waves. Later movements can be more profound and distinct thumps.

To my knowledge, there is no consistent difference between the movement of male and female fetuses.
