Expert Q&A
I have had 2 ultrasounds with this pregnancy. The first one showed the baby at 5.5 weeks, however, I was supposed to be at 6 weeks. The doctor said not to worry. My next ultrasound measured the baby at 6.5 weeks, however I was supposed to be at 7.5 weeks based on the first ultrasound and 8 weeks based on my dates. The doctor didn't have any answers for me he said there is nothing they can do and we just have to wait --- come back in 3 weeks. Is this normal?
The normal range of error of a first trimester ultrasound is +/- 3 to 7 days. By 7 weeks of gestation a fetal heartbeat should be seen. If this is not present or if the gestational sac is not growing one must question both the dating of the pregnancy and/or the viability. The only thing to do is to give the situation some time and to repeat the ultrasound.
