Expert Q&A
Question:
I'm happily married and I thought I was ready to have a baby. Now I'm eight weeks pregnant and I just don't feel happy. I've felt badly for several weeks, and I keep telling myself I'll be more excited when I'm not so sick. Have I failed at being a mom so far?
Answer:
One of the major reasons you're not feeling well at this stage of your pregnancy might be related to your hormones. They can cause havoc with both your emotional and physical feelings around this time, so be patient with yourself, as things often start to settle down with both around the second trimester. It is hard to feel excited about anything if you are nauseated and vomiting at the same time! We set high expectations for ourselves when we become pregnant; that everything will go perfectly...and when it doesn't, we feel like failures. This is just a difficult time for you. Your body is not acting the way you expected it to, and you feel ill. But by no means does it mean you have failed at being a mom. Give yourself time and permission to not feel well right now. Things will hopefully turn around as time goes on."
