Expert Q&A
Question:
I have a friend who is petite, around 5 feet, 2 inches tall and 100 pounds pre-pregnancy. She is 22 weeks and expecting twins. She has gained all the weight in her belly and boobs, and is having a hard time finding clothes that fit her. Is there a company that specializes in maternity clothes for women expecting multiples, or to you have had advice. We are very desperate. Please help!
Answer:
I am unaware of any company that manufactures maternity clothing for women expecting multiples. Most maternity wear is designed for a wide range of expanding bellies and busts. As we mentioned in a previous article, you usually buy maternity clothes in your regular size. However, and especially since your friend is petite to start with, she might be able to find short-sleeved shirts and dresses in larger sizes that will still fit her.

If she is currently 22 weeks pregnant, she could probably get through her summer months with a lot of cool, A-line type sundresses without any waistband at all. Dresses have the added benefit of being more forgiving to women 5 feet, 4 inches and under if she has a hard time finding petite sizes.

If she prefers pants/shorts/skirts, she might benefit from the waistbands with velcro tabs, or with a pull-through elastic with button holes. These types of waistbands can be let out gradually as the belly expands more and more. Some companies, such as Rebel Maternity, pair the elastic pull through button hole waistband with a front stretch panel for added comfort in their pants AND offer the pants in petite sizes! As your friend proceeds into the cooler months, she might feel comfortable in cotton/spandex jumpers (with deep armholes for a more roomier bust) with a long or short sleeve crop top underneath. The cotton/spandex will offer her more freedom of movement as she nears the end of her pregnancy.

Please let us know if we can help you further. Best wishes to your friend for a healthy and happy pregnancy!
