Expert Q&A
I have been kickboxing for nine months. I am thinking about becoming pregnant with our third child. Can I continue to kickbox? I know that I will have to stop sparring, but can I still participate in the other aspects of the sport? We shadow box for 30 minutes, work out on bags for 30 minutes, and also focus punch with partners."
My concern with kickboxing during pregnancy is related to the fact that during pregnancy the hormone relaxin circulating in your blood makes your joints more lax, creating an experience of being more flexible than you really are, thus predisposing you to possible injury. In the sixth month of my pregnancy I was dancing and all I did was lift my knee up and out, similar to a martial arts kick, and I experienced the reality of that pubic bone separation that occurs to allow for the baby to exit. OUCH! I couldn't walk without pain for the rest of the day, and had to rest without exercise for several days. The quick, blasts of movement may cause lower back pain, hip or knee pain... you name it. Pregnancy is a very vulnerable time for your joints and muscles. It would be best to engage in fitness regimes that encourage focus, concentration and really engaging your muscles on a deep level, like Yoga, Pilates or traditional strength training with a strong focus on posture and form. For cardiovascular fitness I suggest walking and stationary cycling."
