Expert Q&A
Question:
I am four weeks pregnant and play sand volleyball in a summer league. Is this okay for me and my baby?
Answer:
It's recommended during pregnancy to discontinue exercise that may cause collision and falling. Only you can tell if your volleyball playing fits into that category. The overhead arm movements may cause some discomfort later on in your pregnancy, but it's up to you to listen to your body. Not every expectant mother responds to certain activities in the same way, not matter how fit you are. Above all, listen to your body, and discontinue anything that makes you feel uncomfortable. Note that what feels good now may not feel good later on in your pregnancy, and vice versa. What feels uncomfortable now, may feel fine later. One thing is for sure, pregnancy teaches you not to have any expectations of how your life is going to be. We simply have to listen carefully, and take care of ourselves and our baby.
