Expert Q&A
Question:
I'm a yoga instructor with a strong desire to offer both pre- and postnatal yoga classes. I feel very comfortable with my knowledge of yoga and ability in this area. What other training would be useful? I love your approach of multiple methods and freedom of choice.
Answer:
The only organization that I know of that certifies teachers to teach Yoga during pregnancy is MotherWell (1-800-MOM-WELL, 717-258-4641). I have not participated in any of their programs personally, so this is not a personal "recommendation." However, I thought that it might be a good place to start in your research.

If you cannot participate in a certification program you should spend some time learning about what the common complaints are of pregnant women, and among the postures you are able to teach, find out which yoga postures can alleviate their discomfort, and also what postures aggravate certain discomforts. You should know when to stop going upside down, doing twists, laying on your back, at what stage the balance is more precarious, and what the most common and easily used props are and at what stage you use them.

I'm so happy that you're interested in stepping into the arena of working with pre- and postnatal women! Good luck.
