Expert Q&A
Question:
I am five to six weeks pregnant. I work out at home with video tapes, specifically The Firm, which uses free weights and step. I have worked up to dumbells ranging from 5 to 20 pounds each for squats, lunches and the like three times a week. I also do Step Reebok one to two times a week. Can I continue at this level of fitness?
Answer:
You have worked up to a good fitness level and shoould be able to continue your routine as long as you feel up to it and have your doctor's or midwife's approval.

As you progress in your pregnancy, you will notice posture changes caused by the enlarging uterus and breasts. Some muscles will need special attention during the second half of pregnancy to prevent discomfort and long-term posture problems. Be sure to stretch your lower back muscles, hip flexors and pecs. Also be sure you strengthen your upper back and abs (avoid crunches after the first trimester).
