Expert Q&A
Question:
I haven't been exercising regularly. Now that I'm pregnant, is it OK to start an exercise program?
Answer:
Yes, it should be fine to start an exercise program during pregnancy, even if you haven't already been exercising. Because exercise gives so many benefits to the mother and her baby, the ACOG recently changed its guidelines to reflect this as well.

Benefits of prenatal exercise include:

  • reduced risk for interventions during labor
  • reduced chance for a Cesarean delivery
  • shorter labor and quicker recovery
  • improved posture, sleep, self-esteem and body image
  • better APGAR scores for your baby

Regular exercise, such as walking or prenatal aerobics, is preferable to intermittent exercise. You should check with your health care provider if you have any questions about your exercise regimen.
