Expert Q&A
Question:
Is there any risk to high-altitude backpacking during pregnancy?
Answer:
Yes. Absolutely. High-altitude sports decrease and alter the tensions of the gases in the air we breathe. The combined effects of high altitude and exercise produce the greatest stress on the body. During pregnancy when there are many changes to your circulatory and pulmonary systems, the adaptive capabilities of the body are limited, with possible negative effects on the pregnancy and baby. Pregnant women should not train at altitudes higher than 7,500 feet.
