Expert Q&A
Question:
I have been combining a walking routine (about 15 miles/week) in all weather (except rain or snow) with three days at the gym doing moderate weight lifting for my upper and lower body. I have never felt better and want to continue this routine throughout the coming months. I am six weeks pregnant. Any suggestions as to how I can change this routine or is it safe to continue as I have been doing as though nothing has changed?
Answer:
The workout routine that you've adopted is a sound routine that can be continued throughout your pregnancy as long as you have your doctor's approval to do so. Check out the Pregnancy Today website for the ACOG (American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology) guidelines on exercise during pregnancy for all the general precautions. In your exercise routine, remain aware of how your body responds now versus prior to pregnancy. If you feel more tired than usual, rest without allowing yourself to feel badly about not being able to keep up. In your weight lifting routine emphasize upper and lower back exercises to prevent any future back pain as a result of carrying your baby and all the gear that follows you around."
