Expert Q&A
Question:
I'm currently nine weeks. Prior to being pregnant, I worked out five to six days a week cross training. The last four weeks my workouts have been cut down significately by morning sickness. Is there anything I can do to ease my sickness and maintain my muscle tone?
Answer:
Even a normal healthy pregnancy can cause an expectant mother to slow down a bit. This is not always easy to accept. Go with your gut feeling about how hard to push yourself. Try to exercise at a time of day when the morning sickness is less severe and make sure you eat small, frequent snack/meals.

Muscle tone can be maintained by gentle stretching and strengthening exercises. The books Yoga for Pregnancy by Sandra Jordan or Positive Pregnancy Fitness by Sylvia Klien Olkin may provide some ideas.

Once you feel better, remember to ease back into your routine gradually. Better yet, look for a prenatal exercise class at local health clubs and hospitals or try water aerobics.
