Due to a previous miscarriage with severe complications, I am in the worst physical shape of my life -- overweight and sedentary. I am also eight weeks pregnant. I'd like to start exercising, both for my health and for the baby, but am concerned that starting a new exercise program may be unwise at the moment. All the exercise advice already in the list seems to be for people who had been exercising previously. So, the question is, what kind of exercise program do you recommend for someone who is in their first trimester and badly out of shape?

It is perfectly acceptable for a pregnant woman with an non-complicated pregnancy to begin an exercise program during pregnancy. Before starting any program she should get an OK from her healthcare provider, and ideally, join a supervised prenatal fitness class so that she can be provided with a safe and effective exercise program. You haven't said how long ago it was that you went through your miscarriage, so it is especially important for you to talk with your healthcare provider and discuss whether exercise is appropriate for you. If she gives you the go-ahead to exercise, I think it would be best for you to work with a fitness instructor with experience in prenatal exercise. The instructor can help you create a safe fitness program and help you modify your exercise when needed. The best way to find a prenatal fitness program in your area is to talk with other pregnant women and new moms, check with local hospitals and fitness centers and ask your obstetrician or midwife.
