I have been training for a marathon for several months. I just recently found out that I am pregnant, and am thrilled! What I am concerned about is the fact that in my fourth week, before I knew I was pregnant, I ran a 9-mile session. I drank 32 ounces of water while running, but did get hot and sweated a lot. I have heard that raising the body's core temperature too much can cause brain damage to the fetus. What is the possibility that I unknowingly caused such a thing to occur? I, of course, will not be continuing such intense training, but am worried sick about this nine mile run. I welcome any info you may have.
While raising the body's temperature does reduce blood flow to the fetus, it would be highly unlikely that this isolated run did any damage to the fetus.
Drinking fluids also helps preventing significant core temperature elevations. It is perfectly safe and advisable to exercise during pregnancy. Listen to your body, drink fluids and stay in shape!
