Expert Q&A
Question:
Are protein powder shakes OK to drink during pregnancy?
Answer:
Too much protein is not necessarily a good thing. If you are already eating a protein rich diet you will end of storing the extra calories as fat. In addition long-term consumption of a high protein diet is hard on the kidneys.

If you know you don't eat enough protein, then the shake is not a bad idea. I think food is the best way to go, but if you are very active and need something to fill the gap then its fine. Remember, you can easily meet your extra protein and calorie needs in the second and third trimester by eating regular food. As long as you are using the shake as a supplement, then it doesn't seem to be a problem.
