Expert Q&A
Question:
My wife is pregnant and is still taking her regular vitamins and vitamin E supplement along with her prenatal vitamins. Can she take too many vitamins?
Answer:
The only vitamin that may be a problem is vitamin A. She should get no more than 5000 IUs of vitamin A in all her supplements combined.

Besides that, pregnancy is a time of high metabolism and increased need for nutrients. Since your wife is "building" another human from her own raw materials, she needs the best and adequate amounts of those building blocks.

Adequate EPA and especially DHA (from fish oil) are especially important during the first trimester for supporting the baby's evolving nervous system. There is research that this small intervention can make a big difference in Baby's IQ and cognitive abilities throughout his/her lifetime. So do support your wife to eat well ? lots of vegetables and quality proteins, and take her vitamins!
