Expert Q&A
Question:
I had a piece of mincemeat pie at a friend's house, and now I'm craving it! What exactly is mincemeat pie?
Answer:

Mincemeat is a rich, spicy preserve made of fruit (usually cherries, dried apricots, apples, pears, raisins, citrus peel) nuts, beef suet, various spices and brandy or rum. Old time mincemeats included minced, cooked lean meat – hence the name. Modern versions don't use meat. The ingredients are combined, covered and allowed to age for a month. The mixture is then used as a filling for pies and tarts, particularly around Thanksgiving and Christmas.
