Expert Q&A
Question:
I recently found out I am pregnant with our first child. I called my doctor to schedule my first prenatal appointment. He did not want to see me for several weeks. Is it normal to wait this long before the first visit?
Answer:
I'm assuming you found out you are pregnant within a few days of missing a period, and so the wait seems very long, however, this is not at all unusual. We like to see women start their prenatal care in the first trimester, and women at increased risk for early pregnancy problems much earlier. Since this is your first pregnancy, your first appointment at anywhere from eight to 10 weeks sounds fine.

By waiting a few weeks for your first exam, your doctor or midwife will be able to feel changes in your uterus which will help in determining your due date. Remember, only about 5 percent of women will deliver on this date. Be prepared to possibly deliver one to two weeks after this date.
