Expert Q&A
Question:
What can my husband and I expect at our first visit to our obstetrician?
Answer:
During your first prenatal visit, a detailed record of your health history is taken and a physical exam is performed. Typical tests done in early pregnancy include blood type and Rh, blood count, urinalysis, pap smear and tests for hepatitis, syphilis, rubella and HIV. Additional testing depends on your specific health history. For example: Will you be 35 or older at delivery? Is there a family history of cystic fibrosis?

This initial visit lasts from 30 to 60 minutes, and patients return monthly until the third trimester, when visits increase in frequency.
