Expert Q&A
Question:
I am currently 32 weeks into my pregnancy. My obstetrician said I am at risk for toxemia. What are the symptoms of toxemia? Is weekly monitoring adequate?
Answer:
Once or twice a week is adequate office appointment spacing for preeclampsia (toxemia) monitoring. Toxemia can develop very quickly, but usually has some symptoms that are noticed by the patient or signs that are picked up by the obstetrician. The best thing you can do to help monitor your pregnancy for this condition is to be aware of the symptoms and to not hesitate to call your doctor if you are not feeling right.

Common symptoms of preeclampsia include extreme swelling of the legs, feet, hands and face; headache; visual changes like blurring or seeing "floaters÷; upper abdominal pain or severe nausea; and decreased urination.
