Keeping track of the baby's development is also a priority. An ultrasound helps the doctor see the baby's limbs, spinal cord, heart and movement. Importantly, it can also be used to measure the amniotic fluid and the baby's growth (in order to plan delivery) as you near term.
Electronic fetal monitoring (also called a non-stress test or NST) tracks the fetal heart rate, movement and uterine contractions through monitors on top of the woman's belly. It helps the doctor detect any concerning changes during the pregnancy, and especially near delivery, such as decreased fetal responsiveness.
