Expert Q&A
Question:
I am 39 weeks pregnant and I was wondering if it would hurt to ask the doctor about inducing me 4 days earlier then my due date. I am having a healthy pregnancy.
Answer:
Induction of labor carries with it a somewhat increased risk of needing a cesarean section. This is especially a concern if your cervix has not had time to naturally prepare or "ripen" for labor. For women who have a "ripe" cervix (which is determined by cervical examination) the risk is not as great.

Some women have medical or pregnancy-related issues that make induction prior to natural labor necessary. In general, most obstetricians feel that induction should be reserved for women with these medical issues and not for convenience (of either the doctor or the patient) because of the increased risk involved. I would speak to your physician about your particular situation.
