Expert Q&A
Question:
My daughter is interested in becoming a doula. Where can we find out about training and salary? She lives in Israel and we live in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Do you have accredited schools or training programs we can look into here in Minnesota? Can you provide us with any information to help us understand this profession? She wants this for a profession and we are curious about the popularity of it and the credibility of the doula in society. Are there doulas in Minneapolis at any of the hospitals? If you cannot answer these questions can you direct us to a place that could?
Answer:
There are two main certifying bodies for doulas in North America. One is Doulas of North America (DONA) and the other is The Association of Labor Assistants and Childbirth Educators (ALACE). Each group requires a certain amount of reading, a certain number of hours in a training workshop (usually two to three days) and a certain amount of experience and evaluation before they will certify a doula.

The doula's effectiveness is demonstrated in numerous random controlled studies which show among other things, a decrease in Cesarean rate of 50 percent. Forceps deliveries are reduced by 30 percent, Pitocin use is reduced by 40 percent, length of labor by 25 percent and Epidural use is reduced by 60 percent.

Because of these excellent outcomes, doulas are rapidly gaining recognition as vital members of the birth team and many hospitals have worked with at least a few doulas. As for doulas in your particular part of the country, the DONA directory includes a number of Minneapolis area doulas. To obtain their phone numbers contact DONA by e-mailing ASKDONA@aol.com or by going to their Web site at www.dona.com. The Web site also has great information about doulas in general, including more statistics and information about training workshops.

ALACE can provide similar information. You may contact them through the following e-mail address: ALACEHQ@aol.com.

In order to get a better sense of what doulas do, I recommend you read two books. The first is Mothering the Mother by Marshal Klaus, MD, John Kennell MD and Phyllis Klaus. The second is Special Women by Paulina Perez. Together, the books give a clear view of what exactly it is that a doula does to obtain such great outcomes. They will also help you gain a sense of what it is like to actually live the life of a doula. It requires an enormous commitment but is incredibly rewarding.

Good luck to your daughter!
