Expert Q&A
Why do the hospitals only allow ice chips while in labor?
The concern is that having liquids or food will lead to vomiting. In a situation in which you might need anesthesia for an emergency delivery, the anesthesiologists are concerned that you might vomit up that food or liquid and then inhale it into your windpipe because you are sedated or under anesthesia. This condition is called aspiration. It can cause severe inflammation to the lung system and cause pneumonia, which can be fatal. In pregnancy, because of the hormones and effects of the pressure from the large uterus on the stomach, this condition is perhaps more likely to occur. Some hospitals will allow very low-risk women to have clear liquids and food during labor, so you can certainly check into the different policies at your local hospitals.
