Expert Q&A
I just found out that I'm pregnant. I'm so happy, but then I realized that I had taken a few laxatives. Does this pose a danger to my baby?
I doubt that the laxative you used will be a problem, but bring this to the attention of your provider at your next appointment. Generally, laxatives are avoided in pregnancy unless simples measures such as diet and exercise fail to correct constipation. Milk of Magnesia, Metamucil and Colace are better alternatives during pregnancy. The problem with most over-the-counter medications in pregnancy is that there are no large studies documenting their safety, since few pregnant women are willing to participate."
