Expert Q&A
I am 17 weeks pregnant, and have been fighting several sinus infections plus pneumonia since the day I conceived. I've been on four different antibiotics so far, and I'm worried that my baby will be affected. Can you give me more information on antibiotics and pregnancy?
When prescribing drugs in pregnancy, your health care provider must always weigh the risk to the fetus of the mother taking the medication versus the benefit to the mother. There are five pregnancy categories for medication: A ? controlled studies have shown no risk to the fetus; B ? no evidence of risk in humans; C -- risk cannot be ruled out; D ? positive evidence of risk; and X -- contraindicated in pregnancy. Most antibiotics are category B drugs and can be administered during a pregnancy. It is important to recognize the effects that a serious upper respiratory infection in the mother can have on the health of the fetus and treat these infections appropriately with safe antibiotic therapy."
