In my practice, at eight weeks of pregnancy, I will usually recommend acetaminophen to contol a fever and aches, warm salt water gargles for a sore throat, eucalyptus cough drops for a cough. If no improvement occurs in two days or if symptoms worsen, I will see the patient to perform a strep screen and evaluate the patient for treatment with antibiotics and cough suppressants, expectorants, or decongestants.
Currently, the American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology recommend that pregnant women consider taking a flu vaccine. This vaccine should, however, be given by the middle of December.
