Expert Q&A
Question:
I have suffered from panic disorder in the past and it is coming back now that I am toward the end of my pregnancy. I also have a phobia of hospitals, doctors, etc. What medication can they give me to calm me and stop the anxiety?
Answer:
There are medications called anxiolytics which have been used cautiously and at low doses during the last trimester of pregnancy to help with anxiety and panic disorder. Benzodiazepines are one class of these medications; and common ones are Ativan (lorazepam) and Valium (diazepam).

Did you see a psychiatrist during the last time you were experiencing panic disorder? It might be less frightening for you to speak with someone with whom you already familiar, and if a certain medication helped you before, it may be helpful again. Of course, you can also talk with your obstetrician about what you are going through.

Some women who want alternatives to medication learn stress reduction and relaxation techniques, and are often able to do these on their own. However, even though you might be afraid to do so, it may be really helpful to consult with a mental health professional who has expertise in cognitive-behavioural therapy. Ask someone you trust for a referral. You can be taught new ways of thinking and coping with stress that will reduce your symptoms and the intensity of your anxious feelings. It may only take a few sessions to help you start feeling better. You are on the right track about wanting to tackle the problem now before the baby comes. Try and put your fears on the "back burner" long enough to find yourself the help you need.

Good luck!
