Signs of clinical depression may include: sleep and appetite disturbances, lack of interest, lack of energy, poor concentration, feeling out of control or helpless and hopeless, and a feeling of sadness which won't go away. In the extreme, the woman may even feel suicidal.
Depression is particularly noticeable and troublesome during pregnancy, which is supposed to be a time of great happiness and expectation, for the most part. When someone is feeling deeply depressed during a time in their life when some degree of happiness and excitement are expected, it certainly bears immediate consultation and assessment by a professional, preferably one experienced in affective (mood) disorders. Depending on the degree of severity of the depression, there are many possible options in terms of treatment, including counseling and/or medication, to name just a few.
It always helps, too, to have a reliable and trustworthy support system where feelings can be shared in a non-judgmental, accepting environment.
