Expert Q&A
Question:
During my first pregnancy, I was very sick. I had morning sickness 24 hours a day. I am now pregnant again and have the same problem. I cannot keep any food down and am deathly ill. I get sick (throw up) about six times a day. Any suggestions?
Answer:
Please call your health care provider right away. Severe vomiting can lead to dehydration and, on occasion, hospitalization if not addressed early. If you are unable to tolerate any fluids for 12 hours or are not urinating every few hours, you need to be seen.

Some strategies for nausea include eating crackers prior to getting out of bed (some women leave them in the bathroom for that 3:00am trip), drinking ginger tea, soda pop, sour lemonade or one of the sport drinks. Sucking on sour candy during the day also helps. Bio-bands (accupressure bracelets) help some women, as does 50mg of Vitamin B6 taken one to four times a day (do not exceed 200mg).

Please remember that most women feel much better by 12 weeks of pregnancy, and such sickness (which can strike at any time of day) rarely complicates the rest of pregnancy.
