Expert Q&A
I am 19 weeks pregnant and my belly button is very sore, like a bruise. Is this because of my expanding uterus, or the fact that I did have some violent vomiting the day before?
Either your expanding uterus or the vomiting can be the cause of a sore belly button. If the vomiting was the cause, the tenderness will probably resolve in a day or two. If it is the expanding uterus, it will probably persist until after delivery. Some women can get unbilical hernias during pregnancy. If you can feel a lump or bump around the belly button, you should bring this to the attention of your health care provider because this may be a symptom of an umbilical hernia. In any case, if the soreness persists more than two days you should discuss this with your provider, who may want to examine you.
