Expert Q&A
Question:
I have heard of women using water for comfort during labor. How does this help?
Answer:

There are two common ways to use water as a comfort measure. First, drinking plenty of water will allow your muscles to function properly. Since the uterus is a muscle, it will benefit from hydration by being able to have effective contractions that come regularly and increase in length, which makes labor shorter.

The second way to use water for comfort is by taking a shower or bath. Hot water spraying on the back feels great for backaches, and so is the standing position. In the bath, the weight of the baby is supported, there is more freedom of movement and water can cover the back and the belly.
