Expert Q&A
Question:
I have recently had an ultrasound and been told I have a large fibroid: 13 x 7 x 8 cm. It seems to be in the upper left of my uterus, but the fetus is in the lower center. Is there anything special I ought to do to prevent further growth?
Answer:
Fibroids are noted in 30 to 80 percent of women. They are growths of muscle that commonly enlarge during pregnancy because of elevated levels of estrogen. There is nothing a patient can do to prevent this. Yours is quite sizable.

Fibroids can cause complications during pregnancy. These problems might include early delivery, premature separation of the placenta (abruption), increased incidence of Cesarean section and pain. The vast majority of patients experience no problems, however, please discuss your concerns with your physician.
