Expert Q&A
Question:
Can you tell me about degenerative disk disease during pregnancy? Is it considered a risk factor during pregnancy?
Answer:
Degenerative disc disease (DJD) is a wearing away of the cartilage (discs) between the vertabrae. This condition is usually seen in older people. I am not aware of any studies showing that pregnancy is considered a risk factor for DJD. However, any additional weight added onto the spine may aggravate existing disc problems regardless of whether the weight gain is due to pregnancy or some other cause. If you have disc problems, it is especially important for you to practice stretches which will improve your posture and flexibility.

Yoga would be an excellent exercise for you. Yoga includes slow moving stretches, breathing and relaxation techniques. You might check around for yoga classes held in your area to see if you can find any instructors who have experience training pregnant students. Also, the exercises on my yoga video are specifically for pregnant women. I think you'll find the video very helpful for keeping your discs and spine healthy.
