Is there any way to improve my diet early in my pregnancy to avoid a subsequent case of gestational diabetes? I really want to avoid all the interventions it caused during my last pregnancy, although my case was mild."
Gestational diabetes recurs in about 50 percent of pregnancies. All patients with a diagnosis of gestational diabetes should be given a two-hour glucose tolerance test following their six-week postpartum exam to exclude diabetes unrelated to the pregnancy. As always, returning to a normal weight for your height becoming pregnant again and regular exercise can be of benefit. Because the disorder involves an abnormal response to the normal levels of insulin produced, there is no preventive therapy available."
