Expert Q&A
Question:
My ultrasound shows I have two placentas. How does this happen? Is this rare? Are there any other complications besides the doctor maybe having to remove the second placenta if it detaches from the other one at birth?
Answer:

This question would be better addressed by the doctor who is familiar with your ultrasound scan. This may be a condition of an accessory lobe from one placenta. Since the doctor will now the position and size of this extra placenta by the ultrasound, he or she can tell you if it is expected to be difficult to remove it with the main placenta.
