Expert Q&A
Question:
Ever since I got pregnant, it seems like I'm always constipated and have been really uncomfortable. What can I do to relieve this?
Answer:
Constipation is not an uncommon problem during pregnancy. It can occur because the hormones of pregnancy relax the bowel and slow gastric motility. For this reason, it is very important to drink plenty of water, eat a lot of fresh fruits and vegetables, and exercise regularly (walking is best).

In the event you still have problems with constipation, first try using a fiber laxative like Metamucil, Citracil or Fibercon. You can use a suppository, but because the bowel may become dependent upon exteranal stimulation, I would try all other options first.
