The most important thing to remember with your yoga practice is to listen to your body. Yoga, unlike many other fitness pursuits, has very few "do's and dont's." Regular yoga practice will increase your ability to feel what your body needs. If a particular posture feels uncomfortable, causes any pain, or puts you off balance, then don't do it. This is your body signalling you to stop. If you feel even the slightest bit uneasy with a particular posture, it's a good idea to ask your instructor to give you an alternative. In the beginning of your yoga practice, and your pregnancy, you may not be able to tell the difference between caution and internal guidance. Go with the caution if you feel it.
Ideally it's best to find a prenatal yoga class. Second to that is a basic beginner level yoga class. Inquire about classes in stores frequented by pre-natal women and new mothers. Also, an experienced yoga practioner will be able to do yoga postures during her pregnancy that someone new to yoga will not be able to do. Know what your abilities are, and remember this is time of nurturing, not a time to seek out any new challenges.
