Expert Q&A
Question:
I am just beginning my third trimester and am very tired and depressed. I find it extremely difficult to get out of bed or accomplish what I need to. Is this normal during pregnancy and if so what can I do?
Answer:
There are often difficulties in trying to sort out what is "normal" during the third trimester from what isn't. Many of the symptoms that women go through during this time ARE normal, like the tiredness you are experiencing.

However, what is troublesome is that you are also feeling depressed, which is not usually expected during the third trimester. You did not elaborate on what is happening in your life, stresses you may be going through, a family history of depression, or other symptoms. Signs of a clinical depression are sadness, changes in appetite or sleep, poor concentration, lack of interest in usual activities, lack of energy, hopelessness and suicidal feelings or behaviour. If any of these are present, PLEASE contact your health care provider, as soon as possible. Often, treatment, if it is necessary (sometimes even with anti-depressant medication) in the third trimester, can help alleviate a postpartum depression later.

Please take care of yourself.
