Expert Q&A
Question:
Why do prenatal vitamins sometimes make me nauseous?
Answer:
Prenatal vitamins can cause nausea for a couple of different reasons. The most common being that most of them contain a lot of iron, and iron is hard on the stomach. Another reason is that some prenatal vitamins have a scent associated usually with the coating on the tablet. During pregnancy women can be more sensitive to odors and too much of any smell can cause nausea.

Drug companies try to be helpful and have created chewable prenatal vitamins, uncoated tablets, tablets with little or no iron, and some with additional B6 to try to prevent nausea associated with morning sickness. To try to prevent nausea, some women take their vitamin at bedtime so that any nausea would occur while they were asleep.
