Expert Q&A
Question:
I know it is very ridiculous but I have been struggling with bulemia for many years. So far I have kept it under control since I've become pregnant. I am now 24 weeks and found myself giving in a couple of times in the last week. How does this effect my baby? I know the obvious about the baby not getting enough nutrients but I make sure that doesn't happen. It only happens when I give in to myself and eat something not healthy. Any information would be helpful.
Answer:
It's not ridiculous. Bulemia is a serious and all too prevalent eating disorder. It can have serious ramifications for a pregnancy. Women with eating disorders in general, and bulemia specifically, are at increased risk for miscarriage, hyperemesis gravidarum (intractable vomiting causing dehydration and requiring hospitalization), and, perhaps most important, growth retardation of the baby. I strongly suggest you seek help for this throughout pregnancy. Regular counseling with someone with expertise in managing eating disorders will help you stay in control and keep your baby's health as your highest priority. The good news is, I have recently read a study that said that some women with eating disorders often do very well with pregnancy, i.e., their bulemia goes into remission. It sounds like this applies to you up to this point. Do all you can to stay on top of it!
