Expert Q&A
Question:
I am considering a pregnancy at 42 years of age. What problems or complications can I expect? I previously have had four successful births.
Answer:
The primary risk that a woman who will be older than 35 years of age at the time delivery faces is an increased risk of her infant being born with abnormal chromosomes. For a woman who is 43 years old at delivery, the risk of having a live born child with any chromosomal abnormality is one in 32. The most common chromosomal abnormality is Down's Syndrome, but there are many others. Genetic testing ? CVS or amniocentesis ? can be performed early in the pregnancy to determine the chromosomal makeup of the fetus.

Other complications can occur, but are primarily related to your state of health prior to getting pregnant. A visit with your physician before attempting pregnancy is strongly recommended.
