Yesterday, my wife and I worked very hard cleaning the house. She is 21 weeks. This morning, she experienced major bleeding while we were having intercourse. We immediately quit and I called the doctor. He did an ultrasound and said everything looked ok, but for her to get bed rest for 4 days. He also said that she was carring the baby low, but not so low as to block the cervix. My question is could you give me any information on bleeding while having intercourse, causes, etc? The doctor also suggested that we not have relations for at least two weeks. I am wondering if we should cut it out all together until the baby is born? Do you think it was the C, or a combination of both that caused the problem?
Bleeding during pregnancy can occur from a low placenta, a placental separation, cervical polyps, a friable (sensitive) cervix or often, for unexplained reasons. The cervix is more prone to bleeding in pregnancy due to engorgement, so spotting after a Pap smear or intercourse can occur.
Follow your doctor's advice on rest and abstinence and consider meeting with him after your next appointment to ask questions about resuming intercourse. Most couples can continue having intercourse throughout pregnancy.
