Expert Q&A
Question:
Do you sunburn more easily when pregnant? Is that why they say laying out for a long time in the sun is considered unsafe? I don't really lie out as I am naturally tan already (Asian) but doesn't that mean I can still burn if I don't wear sun protection even if I am in the water more often than lying in the sun?
Answer:
There are several changes that occur in the skin during pregnancy. There is an increase in pigmentation. This can occur all over the body but generally is concentrated in areas of melanin hyperpigmentation, such as the areola of the nipple, vulva, perianal region, axilla, linea alba.

Some women experience hyperpigmentation of the face on raised areas such as the cheeks, nose chin and forehead. This is called Chloasma, "the mask of pregnancy." Also due to increased estrogen production during pregnancy, there is increased vascularity on the surface of the skin and telangiectasis (spider veins), caused by dilation of small arterioles may develop. Exposure to the sun in pregnancy can increase the development of chloasma and telangiectasis.

Pregnant or not, tanning should be out of fashion. Skin cancer has increased 70% in the last five years and is the number one cause of cancer in women ages 25-35. If you will be exposed to the sun during pregnancy, you should make sure you apply at least a 15SPF 30 minutes before exposure and reapply every two hours. Having a darker pigmented skin does not mean you do not need sun screen. UVA and UVB rays can cause damage without causing burning.
