Expert Q&A
Question:
Is it normal to feel anxiety and insecurity with your spouse and to seem to be crying at the drop of a hat during the last month of pregnancy?
Answer:
I'm sure you'll understand that it is difficult to answer this question without having all kinds of background information, but I'll do my best. I get the sense that perhaps everything seemed to be alright until this last month of pregnancy, which is the end of one stage of your life and the beginning of another. Inherent with these kinds of changes (or any kind of major life change) are feelings of anxiety and insecurity. These may have to do with fear of the unknown (like labor and birth worries) or even feelings of loss. You may be losing your image of yourself as carefree and independent; perhaps impending parenthood and its responsibility and the idea of losing control of your life is frightening for you. All normal fears and anxieties at this time, by the way! Maybe that's where the tears are coming from, as well.

Have you talked with your spouse about your feelings? Sometimes, just sharing your concerns and worries with someone else and getting things out in the open may make them feel less acute and painful.

If you continue to feel anxious and insecure, or you notice that these feelings are increasing or getting out of control, you might consider talking with a professional to help you sort things out. A few sessions of cognitive-behavioral psychotherapy can often go a long way in helping to alleviate fears and anxieties.
