Expert Q&A
Question:
Is it possible to be pregnant and still get your period? If so, how common is it and how long would it last?
Answer:
The term "period" lends itself to much confusion among patients. Menstrual bleeding is a physiologic event in which the uterine lining is shed when conception fails to take place. By definition, one cannot have such bleeding after conception takes place. However, vaginal bleeding can occur after conception that mimics menstrual bleeding. The bleeding episode can be so similar to normal menses that the woman does not even realize that she is pregnant. Also, pregnant women can (and frequently do) have more than one episode of bleeding and these episodes can even come four weeks apart. While it is uncommon for pregnancy bleeding to closely mimic regular cycles, it can happen.
